Bend of Islands Conservation Association
Welcome to the Bend of Islands.
Only 30km north east of Melbourne, alongside the Birrarung, or Yarra River, is a very special place. Situated on 634 hectares of natural bushland, the Bend of Islands area combines environmental conservation with residential use. The zoning ensures that the local flora and fauna are protected by strict regulations, which has resulted in the preservation and restoration of an incredibly high conservation value area with a massive diversity of indigenous species.
Traditionally known as Wyenondabul, meaning “fiery hills” in Woi-wurrung, the Bend is on the lands of the Wurundjeri Wilam clan of the Kulin Nation.
BICA, The Bend of Islands Conservation Association, is the body which drives conservation efforts in the area. Formed in the 1960s, we have become a strong and active community organisation, focused on active conservation and restoration, environmental education, advocacy, and community building.
Through the pages of this website, you’ll be able to learn more about the history and significance of this place, our diverse range of flora and fauna, and upcoming events and activities in this very special place along the Birrarung.

Flora and Fauna
The Bend is home to many diverse plants and animals. Eight distinct Ecological Vegetation Communities have been identified, containing 713 vascular flora species, of which 70% are indigenous, and many mammals, birds, invertebrates, reptiles, fish, turtles, monotremes and marsupials.
These species have been well documented by many passionate locals over the decades, and much of this documentation can be found when exploring the Flora and Fauna pages of our website. There you’ll find a breakdown of different species, records of historical citizen science, and up to date surveying information, with more being added all the time.
What’s On in the Bend
BICA’s 2026 calendar showcases the wide range of community events which happen every month in the Bend of Islands.
These include the monthly bird survey, which has been running for decades to record the bird species in the area, various specialist flora and fauna walks, monthly community landcare events, gathering at the fire station for Cafe Benders, and our magical twice annual Night Event, amongst many others.
Members are welcome to attend all of these, with details emailed out prior to the day.
Click on the calendar to get a closer look at what’s on this month in the Bend, or contact BICA to become a member and start coming along to our events.
