Soil Talk with Diana Gentu

On Saturday 11th, a bunch of people of all ages met at Julie’s in Catani for a talk, the Secret Life of Soil, presented by Diana Gentu.

Many people know Dee, but maybe they don’t know her as having a background in archeology, paleontology, film making, and currently as the head of education and earth science programs in a not-for-profit called Life Rocks.

It was fascinating. Dee made use of the educational cards and the powerful little microscopes to explore a world that we know so little about. Her knowledge is mind-boggling, not just for really interesting left-brained science talk, but also for bizarre little snippets of wonder. For example, did you know that those little slaters that curl into a ball are not indigenous, but the non-rollers are, that they carry their young in a pouch and they breathe through gill-like structures on their back legs?

Fortunately for those of us who want a re-run and those who missed her today, she has agreed to come back; the date is yet to be decided. Don’t miss this one…

Thanks for use of your space, Julie!
